Smoking ban in bars and restaurants

The smoking ban legislation passed by parliament on 24th October will be implemented from 1st March 2013. Officials say the new ban against smoking and smokers will be tightened by this date.

MPs G.Uyanga, L.Erdenechimeg and N.Udval and the Minister for Health held a press conference related to the background of the law and the measures that will be taken in order to introduce the law to the public.

The draft law was first submitted to parliament in 2010, taking only two years to be passed with the support of female MPs.

According to the new law, restrictions will be put in place nationwide on smoking in areas of public services and offices, bars, restaurants, movie theatres, trains, hotels, kindergartens and schools. The law also forbids the sale of tobacco to persons under 21.

The fine for violation of this law will be up to 1,00,000,000 MNT.
