Young Chinese spikers post early warning

Defending nine-time champions China kicked off their title campaign with a straight-sets 25-9 25-10 25-7 win over unfancied Mongolia in the Chang 16th Asian Junior Women's Volleyball Championship at Nakhon Pathom Gymnasium yesterday.

World No 1 China made the most of their height advantage to crush Mongolia in the Pool B preliminary clash.

"I'm happy with the comfortable win in our first match here. We played at our training level. We trained three months in preparation for this tournament with two main aims in mind - winning a final berth and beating our rivals in the final round," said China's head coach Xu Jiande.

The other Pool B match saw India overpower Vietnam in straight sets 25-19 25-20 25-18, while Taiwan outclassed debutantes Turkmenistan 25-8 25-8 25-6 in Pool C.

At the Ratchaburi Gymnasium, New Zealand annihilated Kuwait 25-5 25-8 25-2 in Pool A, while Kazakhstan beat Hong Kong in straight sets 25-21 25-14 25-16 and South Korea pulled off a 25-16 25-9 25-12 win over Sri Lanka in Pool C.

Hosts Thailand, fresh from landing the Southeast Asian Junior Women's Championship here last Friday, were due to take on Iran in the last match of the day in Ratchaburi, while former five-time champions Japan were scheduled to play Australia in the last match in Nakhon Pathom.

A total of 16 teams are vying for four berths at next year's Czech Republic-hosted FIVB World Junior Women's Championship.
